Our Box Office Manager, David Liddell, explains some of the odd requests that come part and parcel of being part of the Playhouse 2 ticketing team...
Well how did I get involved with box office duties? Before Playhouse 2, I had been Ticket Secretary for Congress Players with their musical premieres performed at the Oldham Coliseum Theatre. After four years juggling around 3000 seats and every Tom, Dick and Harriet (mainly cast) owing money right up to the last night of the show I resigned and coincidentally went off to teach in Chicago for a year on a teacher exchange programme!
On my return, I still wanted to be involved in a theatre and Crompton Stage Society seemed to be the obvious choice. At the time someone else was in charge, but that only lasted about three years before the baton was passed to me.
In the early days, "ticket night", as we called it, started at 7:30pm and sometimes we were still at it at 11pm, trying to decipher ticket requests! Such requests included:
"Can we sit in our usual seats?"
"Can we sit facing the stage?"
"Can we sit with...?" except they hadn't returned their booking form.
"Can we sit on I row?" (a row that, unfortunately, does not exist).
Thankfully things have changed, now most volunteers are home by 8:30pm and why's that? Partly through the realisation that none of us knew what "usual seats" were and that request isn't made anymore! And, stamped addressed envelopes are a godsend, especially those that don't need licking!
But most of all it's down to a great VOLUNTEER TEAM who can be relied on to help out on Thursday mornings when we put booking forms in envelopes and Monday evenings when we allocate tickets. We enjoy the social side often going out for lunch together after the Thursday morning meeting and a good chat on the Monday night. Some have been doing tickets for over ten years and for some this is their first year, we are always happy to welcome new volunteers to join our group!
Whilst new technology is with us, our ticketing team will always be valued volunteers as we venture forward in the effort to align Playhouse 2 with the times in which we live.
